I'm so glad you wrote about this. As an author, speaker, and caregiving family advisor, I encounter so many families who are fighting and/or have stopped talking altogether, and oftentimes, this conflict arose out of caregiving issues.

Caring for our family members shouldn't tear us apart. It takes hard work, honesty, and lot of patience and forgiveness to be a family and even moreso when the challenges of caregiving come into the picture.

But it's worth it. Our families help define who we are, and these conflicts teach us about ourselves.

Great article! Pets and seniors can be a great combination if people take the time to get the right pet. A pet that suits a seniors lifestyle and physical abilities will be very beneficial for its owner.

When you are looking to save some money, I find it most helpful to list your expenses from the largest to the smallest. It really helps focus your energy on where you can make an impact. Too many people spend their time trying to shave a few dollars from the smaller items (which can be easy and worthwhile), but cutting one of your bigger expenses by just 5% could put a lot more savings into your pocket than things like packing your lunch twice per week.

There are several areas in this article that concers me. The last sentence in the first paragraph which saids, "more and more Americans are choosing to end their lives in hospice care. "End their lives," might be better stated as, choose quality end of live care with hospice.

In the fourth paragraph, first sentence, "Hospice is a concept of care that focuses on helping the dying to end their days with dignity," This sounds like hospices are helping people to die rather than offering support to the patient and family.

Then the fourth paragraph last sentence stating a physicians may recommend hospice are for patients with chronic illnesses is not true. A person has to be terminally ill before going on hospice services. A patient may be under hospice palliative care for chronic illnesses.

I feel the wording of your article leads the reader to believe hospice services may hasten their life when in fact hospice services offer quality, compassionate, end-of-life care and does not hasten their life.

Your tips are helpful for us seniors--anyone for that matter. Sleeping was improved for my husband and me when we bought a "sleep number" bed. I need an extra firm mattress so my sleep number is around 75 (no more lower backache), while my husband needs a very soft mattress so he sets his side at about 35. Info is available at www.selectcomfort.com. More recently we came across the benefits of earthing and now we wouldn't be without our bed sheet "pad" for a quieter, more restful sleep. Can't recall where we first heard about it but www.whatisearthing.com has helpful info. And, yes, we will now be sleeping in a darker room.

Indeed, sibling conflicts over what is best for Mom or Dad can escalate and make life miserable for all. Consider the emerging resource of family mediation to address this problem. Mediation for families can take the form of a guided discussion, with an objective and neutral, trained person to help families work out agreements. I am a nurse-attorney, and family mediator who works with those who have aging parents, and I can attest to the fact that mediation can be effective, and usually is. Many communities have mediation centers which offer services at low cost. For those who wish to use a professional with subject matter expertise, Mediate.com is a good resource for finding a mediator in your area. Before family members destroy their relationships altogether, try mediation. It's confidential and private. It can be a huge relief.
